Learn the basics of Patchwork Quilting
Sunday 20th July 10.30-4.30
Taught by Lydia
Dive into the vibrant world of quilting in this hands-on day of stitching, history, and creativity. If you’re comfortable with a sewing machine (but new to patchwork), this workshop is your perfect next step.
You’ll sew a small log cabin quilt top—a classic block packed with technique—and explore finishing methods like binding. While completing a full quilt in a day isn’t realistic (unless you opt for a tiny placement-style piece!), you’ll leave with the skills—and inspiration—to finish at home.
What to Expect
While most students won't complete an entire quilt in one day (unless making a very small piece), you'll leave with:
A partially or fully completed quilt top
Samples demonstrating different quilting techniques
The knowledge to finish your project at home
We'll also explore quilting's fascinating history - from practical bedding to political statements and secret messages!
What's Included
All fabrics and materials for your quilt top
Demonstrations of three quilting methods (hand, straight stitch, free motion)
Instruction on professional binding techniques
Use of studio tools (irons, cutting mats, etc.)
Tea, coffee and light refreshments
What You'll Need to Bring
Fabrics for your patchwork- this can be an old shirt, a jellyroll or fat quarters you have bought, scraps of cotton (non stretch). We also have lots of choice at the studio if you prefer not to bring your own.
Lunch (or you can visit one of Crouch End’s local cafe or shops)
Your enthusiasm and creativity!
Who Is This Course For?
This workshop is ideal for:
✓ Confident beginners who can thread and operate a sewing machine independently
✓ Sewers looking to expand into patchwork and quilting
✓ Anyone who loves textiles and wants to learn about quilting's cultural significance
